If anyone’s body and looks need a kickstart after the festive season then it’s those of our editor Tony Mallett. Here, he talks to the owner of a brilliant detox centre in sunny Biarritz
So, the annual excesses of Christmas and New Year have been left behind – or have they? The pounding even the most restrained of us give our bodies over the festive period, allied with the extra stress, and often followed by the January ‘blues’, will all show on the outside. As for the least restrained of us, such as this writer, well the mirror has a cover over it till March. Whether we mean to or not, during December many of us get toxed-up to the max and head back to our jobs and daily routine in January thinking: ‘Well, maybe a sauna and a new haircut will perk me up’. They might well do that but, let’s face it, they’re rarely enough. Hit-and-miss resolutions aside, the early part of the year is the perfect time to cleanse the body and a full detox in expert hands and gorgeous, uplifting surroundings will drastically alter the way you look and feel for the better in just a few days.
Once you’ve given your insides a good clean up, you’ll quickly experience much more energy and start to rapidly lose excess weight. You’ll feel more confident, focused and happier – ready to handle all that 2013 can throw at you. (I’ve been told it could even turn my semi-colon back into a colon. Now that’s magic.)
So, a little background: mum-of-two Fiona Robertson runs Retreat Biarritz in the sunny seaside city – which is easily reached direct from Charleroi airport via low-cost airline Ryanair. After the detox and fasting period, Fiona promises nutrition in the form of delicious and healthy raw food. “What’s more,” she says, “we guarantee you won’t feel as much as a twinge of hunger during your stay.”
As a bonus, towards the end of the week, Fiona’s charges get the chance to become ‘Raw Food Chefs’ with hands-on experience preparing raw food breakfasts, lunches, dinners and desserts.
From Monday-Wednesday, Yoga lessons, which are designed to enhance the detox experience, are part of the program. These are often held in a beautiful garden with superb views of the ocean and mountains. Wow!
Essentially, we’d all benefit from a total break alongside a complete detox. In such circumstances tension quickly drifts away freeing the energy to circulate around the body.
Guests feel rejuvenated after just a few short days, Fiona, who is also a Reiki instructor and successful online coach, summed it all up, telling us: “It works so well that people return again and again to re-set their digestive systems, emerging with renewed vigour and more love for themselves and life.” Sounds like a plan.
